The 1953 coup was directly related to the nationalization/looting of assets in the oil industry. 

Whether the government is elected or not, that is still immoral and a disregard of individual rights, and in this case affected international interests (UK mostly at the time, but that is a side issue as it could have been any other country and would still be wrong).

Unfortunate the installed Shah was repressive. This time round it looks as though the US will leave it up to Iranians to decide, with the Shah only a figurehead, time will tell.

The US will not however want a new Iranian government that is opposed to the US, meaning one that does not respect individual rights.
