The song also won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. "Streets of Philadelphia" achieved greater popularity in Europe than in the United States. While it peaked at #9 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, it became a #1 single in Ireland, Germany, France and Austria, peaked at #2 in the UK, (becoming Springsteen's highest charting hit in Britain), and #4 in Australia. It was specially written and performed by Springsteen for the film “Philadelphia” (1993) starring Tom Hanks, in one of the first mainstream films to deal with HIV/AIDS. The song is listed among the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll.
