Tractors gave farmers cheap power and automation of :90percent: of their labour. Very few zoomed out and used that power to set up self-sustaining systems that don't necessitate their (previous) jobs. Most just started doing the same thing, but with a tractor. To this day, I see ALL my neighbor farmers carrying around water all day. They should have digging into (pun intended) earth works, keylines, perennial crops, etc... a looooong time ago. Yes, this is a parable about Agents and Compute.
