OpenAI Partners with US "War Department" for Classified Network Model Deployment

OpenAI co-founder Sam Altman announced on X that the artificial intelligence research company has entered into an agreement with the U.S. Department of War. This partnership will involve the deployment of OpenAI's proprietary models within the department's classified networks.

The agreement explicitly prohibits the use of these models for mass domestic surveillance and mandates that any deployment involving the use of force, including potential autonomous weapons systems, must adhere to a "human on the loop" principle. OpenAI has stated it will implement technical safeguards for this deployment, ensuring the models operate exclusively on secure cloud networks and will assign FDE (presumably a security role) to oversee model safety.

OpenAI has also urged the Department of War to extend similar terms to other AI companies, advocating for agreements to preemptively address potential conflicts between legal frameworks and regulatory requirements.
