In a safe driving course in which I participated, I was taught to observe the horizon when braking, to avoid hitting a target. If I looked at the rear of the car that I did not want to hit then I would be certain to hit it. Looking beyond the target would allow my peripheral vision to take care of the situation. Similarly, when aiming for goals, look beyond your goal at an expanded vision and provide your sub-conscious some room to manoeuvre.
