The U.S. government and the U.S. Department of Defense, under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, have reportedly moved to bar Anthropic from certain defense-related roles, designating the firm a “supply chain risk.” The decision is notable given that similar designations have not been broadly applied to many contractors, including entities linked to foreign militaries such as the People’s Liberation Army or the Russian Armed Forces. The move follows Anthropic’s refusal to modify safeguards in its AI systems that the company says are intended to prevent uses such as fully autonomous weapons deployment or large-scale domestic surveillance.
