People seem to forget that the House of Saud had maintained an intense rivalry with Iran. The Middle East is being reordered with Saudi and Chinese money. Iran isn't a threat to anyone, they just need to be brought into the new arrangement, and the mullahs can't do it without a face-saving war. Iran also needs to get rid of hardliners to join the new order.
