Donald Trump has told advisers he is leaning toward authorizing an initial strike on Iran in the coming days as a show of pressure to force Tehran to relinquish the capability to develop a nuclear weapon, according to senior officials cited by The New York Times.

Advisers said the president believes that if diplomacy or a limited, targeted attack fails to achieve that objective, he may consider a significantly broader operation later in the year aimed at removing Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and other senior figures from power.
