The opening in the center of the dome measures eight meters in diameter and allows daylight and fresh air to flow into the interior. But rain also falls through this opening – and this is precisely where the genius of Roman architecture becomes apparent. The floor of the Pantheon is not completely flat, but slightly curved. This subtle slope ensures that rainwater is channeled in a controlled manner to a total of 22 drainage holes. Two of these are located directly beneath the oculus, the rest are distributed between the center and the walls. The water is ultimately drained into the Roman sewer system via an underground canal system. This keeps the interior of the Pantheon dry even on stormy days. This solution impressively demonstrates how the Romans masterfully combined functionality and aesthetics – and how they solved technical problems almost 2,000 years ago that still amaze modern architects.
