Bernini’s colonnades stretch like open arms, welcoming the faithful in a graceful embrace.

At the center, the ancient obelisk, older than Christianity, stands like a spine, anchoring the Church to time.

Carved around 1250 BCE under Pharaoh Merenptah, brought to Rome by Caligula in 37 CE, and raised in the Square by Pope Sixtus V in 1586.
